Map and Compass Basics

1. Point the Baseplate to Your Destination:
Place your compass on the map with the edge (as shown) along the desired line of travel. Your compass should now be pointing in the direction you want to go.

2. Set the Compass Heading:
Turn the Compass Dial (7) until "N" points to the north on your map. The Orienting Lines (2) should now be parallel with the (North-South) map grid lines. Your direction or true bearing in degrees is read at the Index Line (4) on the Compass Dial. This true bearing must now be changed to a magnetic bearing, (Declination) which will be set on your compass and followed on the ground. Easy enough if you remember this simple rhyme: Declination West - Compass Best, Declination East - Compass Least. Add a West declination to your true bearing to obtain a magnetic bearing, subtract an East declination. Declination on the French River is 10° WEST.

3. Follow Your Heading:
Now, while holding the compass in front of you with the Direction-of-Travel Arrow (3) inscribed on the base pointing away from your body, rotate your body with the compass until the red end of the Magnetic Needle (1) aligns with the Orienting Arrow (6) on the dial. You are now facing your objective. All that's necessary now is to locate a notch or visible landmark on the horizon that you can identify as being on this course of travel. Put your compass away, and paddle towards it.
